Additional honoraria for teachers who served during the election

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Sunday said additional honoraria for teachers who served extra hours to address technical glitches and other issues during the May 9 polls will depend on the availability of funds.

“First condition is the availability of funds…Second, we have to make sure that any grant of the Commission for additional honoraria will be compliant with DBM [Department of Budget and Management] rules, accounting rules, auditing rules, and COA [Commission on Audit] rules,” acting Comelec spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco said in a press briefing on Sunday.

As soon as election results were announced, although unofficial and partial, showing Ferdinand Marcos Jr. way ahead of second-placed Vice President Leni Robredo in the presidential race, calls for academic walkouts and suspension of classes floated.

 

On May 9, the University of the Philippines (UP) Office of the Student Regent declared on its Facebook page that there will be “no classes under a Marcos presidency” and enjoined students to stage a walkout.

An increase in the salaries of teachers might soon be realized despite the Covid-19 pandemic, according to acting presidential spokesperson and Communications Secretary Martin Andanar.

“I'm sure mayroon ding pagtaas ng suweldo sa mga guro natin. Mahal ni Tatay Digong ang ating mga guro (I’m sure there will be an increase in the salaries of our teachers. Tatay Digong loves our teachers),” he said during the “Ask Me Anything, Anywhere” segment aired on his Facebook page on Saturday.
